Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall released the following statement on the passage of Senate Bill 8:
“This is a good first step for Michigan’s tipped workers and their small businesses all across our state. If it gets done, this agreement would keep thousands of people on the job, help them make more money to support their families, and keep many of our beloved local businesses open for generations to come. Now it’s time for the Senate Democrats to meet me in the middle one more time on the needed changes to the sick time court order and get this agreement across the finish line.
“I offered this 50% tip credit minimum wage plan earlier this week because I believed this was a real bipartisan solution that could bring everyone together and get this done for the people who are counting on us. I knew we would never all agree on a plan that delivered wins just for big labor lobbyists or big businesses. It had to be a solution that prioritized the working people caught in the middle and where everyone gave a little. I’m glad the Senate Democrats ultimately agreed.
“Thank you to Senate Republicans for their unwavering leadership and commitment to protecting workers. They stood strong, held the line, and provided the votes to secure a real solution. This is exactly the kind of resolve we need to come together, finalize my bipartisan sick time benefits proposal, and get this done once and for all next week.
“Tonight’s vote is a step in the right direction, but Michigan workers can’t afford more delays. I put forward a sick time benefits plan that works for everyone — now it’s time for Senate Democrats to do their part. The deal is on the table, and we can get this done now. No more stalling, no more delaying — let’s protect Michigan workers and solve this crisis before next Friday’s deadline.”
