State Rep. Donni Steele (R-Orion Township) today praised a recent decision by General Motors to invest $4 billion in domestic manufacturing plants, including Orion Assembly, a Lake Orion-based facility. Steele, who represents the area where the plant resides, said the move will greatly benefit Oakland County residents and Michigan as a whole.

“America’s auto industry thrives best when we manufacture in Michigan, specifically right here in Oakland County,” Steele said. “I’m grateful for the jobs this move will create and countless families in Lake Orion who will greatly benefit from this economic development.”

The move comes as part of a plan by General Motors to move more jobs back to America from Mexico, specifically in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee. The automotive manufacturer predicts the investments will create between 3,000 and 4,000 new jobs between the three states. Steele, who chairs the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Local Transportation, is greatly encouraged by the move and is hopeful it won’t be the last.

“I love when my products are ‘Made in America’, but ‘Made in Michigan’ is even better,” said Steele. “I sincerely hope this is the first step in a much-needed revival of our automotive industry and development for Oakland County residents.”
