State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township) today led the House in passing her plan to preserve public safety and traffic flow by prohibiting unauthorized individuals from blocking or interfering with roadways.
House Bill 4664 would make it unlawful for individuals to intentionally obstruct or interfere with traffic on public roads, highways, or sidewalks without proper authorization.
“Michigan families, first responders, and commuters deserve roads that are safe and open,” said St. Germaine. “This bill is a common-sense measure that puts public safety first by ensuring our roads remain clear for emergency vehicles and everyday travel.”
The legislation comes amid growing concern over incidents where demonstrations or gatherings have blocked traffic, creating potentially dangerous situations for drivers, pedestrians, and emergency responders.
“Everyone has the right to express themselves, but that right does not extend to putting others at risk,” said St. Germaine. “This plan makes it clear that safety and lawful expression can coexist, but blocking critical infrastructure is not the way to make a statement.”
House Bill 4664 now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
