State Rep. Ann Bollin today voiced her opposition to Senate Bill 932, which Gov. Whitmer signed into law, expanding taxpayer-funded welfare programs beyond what hard-working Michigan families should reasonably expect.

“The people of Michigan believe in lending a hand to help their neighbors during tough times, but they also expect these programs to be temporary and aimed at encouraging independence,” said Bollin, R-Brighton Township. “Instead, what we’re seeing is a significant shift toward bigger government and longer dependence on taxpayer dollars.”

Senate Bill 932 extends the time people can receive cash assistance through the Family Independence Program (FIP) to five years, a 25% increase over the previous four-year limit.

Bollin criticized the bill for failing to ensure that cash assistance remains temporary, arguing that it encourages long-term dependency on government aid rather than promoting personal responsibility and employment.

“This program was designed to help families get back on their feet, not keep them reliant on welfare indefinitely,” Bollin said. “The Democrats’ plan rewards staying on assistance longer, with no effort to close the loopholes that have already led to a 210% rise in welfare fraud from 2019 to 2022.”
