State Rep. Karl Bohnak today thanked Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for declaring a state of emergency in Marquette County following severe, widespread flooding. Rising temperatures have accelerated snowmelt, causing water levels across the area to rise to dangerous levels.

“I commend Gov. Whitmer for acknowledging the dangerous situation our communities face and making emergency resources available to us,” said Bohnak, R-Deerton. “We’re still feeling the effects of the historic snowfall we faced earlier this spring. Increased temperatures, paired with heightened rainfall, has created a situation where water levels are rising extremely fast. These conditions put roads, buildings, and other infrastructure at risk of flooding. We are monitoring the situation closely, and still hope we can avoid much of the disastrous flooding the Northern Lower Peninsula is currently battling.”

Late Friday night, the Marquette County Board of Commissioners also declared a local state of emergency due to the flooding.

The governor’s emergency declaration opens a wealth of state resources to assist with local response and recovery operations. The order also permits eligible communities to seek financial assistance under the state’s emergency management act.
